Computer
Security
The downside of being connected to the world wide web (WWW) is
that the WWW is connected to you, and not all incoming traffic is
friendly.
We can help you combat these ever-present threats and even
resuscitate computers that have succumbed. The tools we use are:
- Fast, and do not take up lots of processing power,
particularly at start up.
- Efficient, and have a
reputation for comprehensively eradicating computer threats.
- Unobtrusive
To learn more about these on-line threats, read on.
Threats can take various forms:
- Computer viruses,
A computer virus is able to replicate itself over the internet, infect
your computer - perhaps by riding on the back of an otherwise harmless
data-file - and compromise your computer once it is present. They
are responsible for a wide and growing number of computer problems,
like poor performance, corrupted system files, and failure to boot.
Viruses, like most threats have a recognisable fingerprint.
This is an unchanging digital sequence that allows virus scanners
to identify them amongst the hundreds of thousands of files that they
scan on your computer.
- Spam. Spam is just unwanted
emails. They are unsolicited, offer products and services you
probably do not want, and slow down your email service by virtue of
their number and frequency.
- Botnets. A botnet is a
network of computers that is within or across another network of
computers that acts collectively to achieve some (usually nefarious)
goal.
- Trojans. A trojan is, like the trojan horse of
Greek mythology, software that when present on your computer, performs
some undesirable function that is to the detriment of users.
Trojans may be responsible for collecting personal information
(bank details) and sending them to some criminal recipient for their
exploitation.
- Keyloggers. Keyloggers record your
keystrokes on your computer and may send that information to some
criminal
recipient. That information could be the user name and
password to your own network, or the security details of your
bank account.
- Fraudsters. Fraudsters often use email to
attempt to discover your banking details. They inform you,
that you are have won a large sum of money, and at some stage of
their communications with you they will request your banking
details. You then discover that money has been removed from your
account without your consent..

What you can expect
from computer hardware in the future?
1. Smaller faster, cheaper, lighter computers for the desktop.
They will be no larger than a DVD drive. They will
be
silent, and run free software, and much of this will be web based.
They will use solid state disks, and large quantities of
cheap
memory.
2. More powerful mobile phones will largely replace
traditional PCs. The
screens of mobiles will occupy as much of the phone as physicallly
possible. "Soft buttons will have largely replaced mechanical
buttons in top of the range phones.
3. Sophisticated screen display technology will be available
that will allow us to
use bigger computer monitors in smaller less likely workplaces.
4. Micro-factories: places of work no bigger than a loft
extension, where budding entrepreneurs labour in their free time
"printing" products with 3D printers and selling their wares
by the internet.
